DIY Aztec/Mayan Cushion Cover

The Mayans and Aztecs are responsible for a lot in our society; my favorite being their patterned textiles. These textile patterns are bright, colourful, geometric and intricate. There's no wonder these patterns are trending worldwide. Bring a little Latin American culture into your home with this DIY cushion cover.

Perfect for your home or as a gift.
TOTAL COST: $12.99

What you will need and how to DIY:

Aztec or mayan patterned fabric and some plain calico for the backing. Fabric was $12.99 a metre. I needed half a metre of both the fabrics.

1 old or new cushion insert

Cut out one 47x47cm panel of your aztec material and use the calico for the two smaller panels.

Overlock or zig-zag the edges of the material to stop fraying.

Create a seam on one of the long sides of the 47x24cm piece of calico. Instead of using pins, I find it easier to iron flat the folded material. Do the same to the other piece of calico.

Sew the seam of the folded fabric.

Pin down the small panels onto the big one. Overlap the smaller seams with the bigger one on top and ensure they are inside out. Sew around the whole edge of the fabrics leaving 1cm seam allowance.

Flip the cushion cover to the right side and place the cushion insert in through the back.
